Chicago

I just spent the weekend in my home away from home: Chicago. Someday I will live there. My beloved Twins played the Cubs…  And my best friend and college roommate Amy has rock star season tickets at Wrigley. So when we saw our two favorite teams were going head-to-head: my family immediately booked tickets to see them play.

We started the trip right: My family flew in on Friday with an entire plane of Twins fans. We even sang baseball songs on the flight. AWESOME!

Saturday we woke up to rain. Saturday was game day — and Wrigley is not the Metrodome — it’s not always 68 degrees and sunny. We packed our ponchos and hopped on the Red Line to Wrigleyville. There, we did some pre-game drinking (because beer makes sitting in the rain more tolerable) and waited for the rain delay to enter the stadium.

Walking into Wrigley, you can’t help but feel its history. It’s relatively small compared to the other stadiums, but I think it’s modest.

Amy’s family’s seats are awesome. They’re about 10 rows up between home plate and the Cubs dugout. TONS of Twins fans were in attendance, in fact, everywhere you turned in Chicago, you’d spot someone wearing Twins gear. Which is funny, because the Twins play in Chicago all the time to play the White Sox.

Joe Mauer, photo by Tracy PelrmanDuring Joe’s first at bat, the stands erupted with cheers. Amy’s dad, who’s been to hundreds of Cubs game said he’s never heard the crowd cheer as loud for an opposing player as they did when Mauer walked up to the plate.

By the seventh inning the sun was out and the ponchos were off. :)

In the ninth inning, with two outs, the entire stadium stood on its feet cheering. Cubs fans cheered for a rally, two players were on base, a solid hit would tie the game. Twins fans cheered for a strike to end the game. Joe Nathan threw final pitch and sealed the deal. Twins won two to nothing.

It was the perfect outdoor ball game. You can see the rest of my photos from the game here.
