I read an interesting article this morning. In my quest to be a better Vikings fan, I thought I’d do a little reading up on my favorite players. Up first, my number 1 pick: Jared Allen.
The article is was written for Sporting News. It follows Jared, his brother and an expert hunter through Allen’s first bear hunt. While talking about Allen’s crazy adventures, and from what I understand there is quite the list, the author notes Allen doesn’t have a laundry list of things to accomplish in his life:
“It isn’t exactly a bucket list, because it doesn’t exist. Ask Jared Allen what adventure he wants to go on next and he has no idea. All he knows is that a bunch of them are out there, and he intends to do each one. As something pops into his head he makes a mental note, works it into his schedule, conquers it and then files it under “done.” Hunting bear is just the latest one.”
I love the idea of not listing it out what you want to do and setting out to do it. Lists change, goals change and above all, circumstances change. For instance, growing up I had a huge crush on Jonathan Taylor Thomas… while it’d be cool to meet him, it’s definitely not something I have to do. I did meet Hanson a year ago - that was fun.
I do have a bucket list, but I keep it evolving, putting things on that spark my interest, taking those off that no longer make sense. Right now it looks like this:
- Backpack around Europe
- Throw out an opening pitch at a baseball game
- Drive across the US (visit Field of Dreams, Disney Land, Grand Canyon and Graceland)
- Swim with dolphins
- Tour the White House
- Hold a monkey or koala bear
I’ve scratched off a trip to Israel (and rode a camel), been to the top of the Statue of Liberty, flown with the Golden Knights and flown in a helicopter.
I don’t like roller coasters, but I do like adventure.
So go ahead, make a list… keep it evolving… and keep looking for your next big adventure.
