There’s a new American Girl doll on store shelves, but the little girls she represents, likely can’t afford her… that’s because she’s homeless.
“Gwen” is a featured character in the Chrissa books. (Chrissa is a girl starting a new school after moving to Minnesota in 2009 and gets bullied. Her character takes a stand against it, teaching other young girls to work out their differences in other ways). American Girl says the Gwen character offers a valuable life lesson.
But homeless advocates disagree.
One advocate told CBS News she’s concerned families and young girls will see the doll and think it’s okay that some children don’t have a home, when in her opinion, it’s not.
The Gwen doll retails for about $95. Which, in my opinion, is too much for a doll in the first place. But I think if AG is going to sell the doll, it should come with information so if families want to have the conversation about homelessness with their children, they’re equipped to do so.
Gwen is a limited edition doll, so she’ll only be available for a few more months.
What do you think? Is a homeless doll inappropriate? Or is it something society needs to bring into the light?
