So after failing to stick to my training chedule, I’m back on track. The weather is beautiful, it’s in the 50’s in early November?! That’s nuts, especially for Minnesota. I like to think the weather is staying nice so I can train for this 5k.
Like Heather told me a week ago: It’s really time to get my butt in gear. At this point, I don’t think it’s realistic to expect I can run the whole 5k. But I’m hoping to be able to run one minute and walk two or three.
Today, I ran one minute, walked four. It’s what I started doing when I started this adventure a month ago. It’s sort of discouraging, but encouraging.
A month ago, I could barely run 20 seconds. Today, I ran the full minute and tried to push myself to run further. Also, I don’t have shooting pain in my shins halfway through. In fact, I have very minimal amounts of pain when I’m totally done.
To the advise of my friends that run, I switched shoes. I paid a ton of money for really nice Nike shoes from a running store, and they caused shin splints. I switched back to my old Nikes, ones I bought on clearance at a Nordstrom Rack, and they feel great. Go figure.
I’m going to keep going out to Lake Harriet and practicing.. that way the real deal won’t be too bad.
