We never did pick up Rachael’s mom. About 20 minutes after I sarcastically wrote “pray for us” in my last post, Rachael and I were rear-ended on a freeway overpass. In a nut shell, traffic on 494 was bumper to bumper, the person in front of us hit the breaks, we hit the breaks, the person behind us hit us. The tap was hard enough to spin us into a 180 and we stopped in time to see a Escape sliding towards Rachael’s door. The guy was able to slow down enough to clip the back of our car, spinning us head on into traffic along the side of the bridge. I called 911 and 30 minutes later the Highway Patrol and an ambulance were on the scene. We went to the hospital and it was confirmed Rachael had a concussion. She will be okay, she just doesn’t remember most of the crash. I am just a little sore, nothing major.
Lesson from the story:
- When the roads are bad, don’t go out if you don’t have to.
- Always wear your seat-belt, we definitely would have went through the windshield or windows if we weren’t buckled up.
- Don’t follow close, especially in slippery conditions.
- Carry a cell phone. I was the only driver to call 911 after the accident.
The weather driving back to KC today was fine, but the roads around the Twin Cities were slippery. I went 50mph until I got to Iowa because there was so much black ice. There were about 45 cars on the side of the road from yesterday’s storm. I’m glad I didn’t drive back then, because I’m certain I would have been in a much worse accident. I’m just glad to be home.
