President Obama is catching a little flack this morning after an interview on Jay Leno. It was the first time a sitting president did late night TV, and he definitely wondered into uncharted territory. Obama and Leno discussed the AIG bailout outrage, life since talking office and his White House bowling skills. That’s when the president said he bowled a 129: “It was like Special Olympics or something.” Whoops.
As you can imagine, the White House released a statement within minutes, before the segment even aired. But it doesn’t matter, the damage is done. It’s a comment that many of us have made, myself included. But it’s still not something you want to hear the president say. He is held to a higher standard… or should be.
But the Special Olympics isn’t taking the slip-up lightly. It released a statement saying, it appreciated the President’s immediate apology and hopes it becomes an opportunity to reverse stereotypes about people with disabilities.
So here’s President Obama’s chance to spin the situation. A Special Olympics bowling champion has challenged the Commander in Chief to a roll-off. Kolan McConiughey has bowled three perfect games and told Obama to bring it on!
On a side note: the snafu proves Obama is a media darling and reminds me to keep an eye on how he’s covered. Had President Bush made that exact comment, he would have been persecuted on the South Lawn.
