A big congratulations and Rock Chalk to Kansas head basketball coach Bill Self.
He was named as Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. And he killed the polling - he won 28 of the votes. Second place, only got 10. He overcame uber challenges this season. He lost all five starters from his Championship team, seven players total. And while this was a “rebuilding year,” the Jayhawks still made it to the Sweet 16. Other reasons Bill Self Rock Chalks your socks off:
- Finished the season 27-8
- Won the Big 12 title for the fifth straight year
- 169 - 40 record at Kansas
- He buys doughnuts and pizza for students who camp out for seats at Allen Fieldhouse
Okay, the last reason probably wasn’t figured into the poll, but whatever, it should have been.
The other big story of the day?
New photos have emerged from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination. Life Magazine has published nearly a dozen photos taken the day the civil rights leader was killed. They include photos taken in King’s hotel room and from the rooms of his inner circle. They’re strikingly eerie because the photographer got unprecedented access to the Memphis hotel following his death.
King was in Memphis in 1968 to support black sanitary workers who were on strike. The day before he was shot, he delivered his “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” speech.
He was killed 41 years ago today.
